Rahu and Ketu Basics

Rahu and Ketu are two important celestial bodies in Vedic astrology, although they are not considered planets in the traditional sense.1 They are known as the “shadow planets” or “shadowy nodes of the moon.”2

Astronomical Significance:

  • Rahu: Represents the ascending node, where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic (the Sun’s path) from south to north.
  • Ketu: Represents the descending node, where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic from north to south.

Astrological Significance:

  • Rahu: Symbolizes desires, ambition, materialism, and the pursuit of worldly success.3 It is often associated with sudden changes, unexpected events, and a tendency towards obsessive behavior.4
  • Ketu: Symbolizes spirituality, detachment, renunciation, and the past life karma.5 It is often associated with isolation, loss, and a tendency towards introspection and philosophical thinking.6

Mythological Significance:

The Hindu mythology surrounding Rahu and Ketu is quite fascinating. It is believed that Rahu, a demon, attempted to drink the nectar of immortality (amrita) during a churning of the cosmic ocean.7 However, the Sun and Moon, who were also partaking in the nectar, noticed Rahu’s deception and alerted Lord Vishnu. Vishnu, in turn, beheaded Rahu with his Sudarshana Chakra.8 However, because Rahu had already consumed the nectar, his head became immortal. This immortal head, known as Rahu, continues to pursue the Sun and Moon, causing eclipses.9 Ketu represents the tail of Rahu’s body.

Impact on Individuals:

The placement of Rahu and Ketu in an individual’s birth chart can significantly impact their personality, life experiences, and destiny.10 Their influence can be both positive and negative, depending on their position and the other planetary influences in the chart.11

It is important to note that while Rahu and Ketu are powerful forces, they are not deterministic. They merely provide a framework within which individuals can shape their own destinies through their choices and actions.
