When the Small Things of life Stop Mattering

Small Things of life

It’s astonishing how much of life we spend caught up in small things. A misplaced word, an unanswered message, a disagreement that grows roots in silence.
We hold on to ego as if it’s proof of strength. Quite forgetting that love and understanding have always been the true markers of courage.

During a recent Reiki healing session, I worked with someone who had lost her husband in a road accident a year ago. Like most couples, they had their share of disagreements — arguments over trivial things, moments when pride overshadowed tenderness. Yet after his passing, none of that mattered. Her grief ran deep, but what she spoke about most weren’t the big milestones or the dreams they never fulfilled. It was the small, ordinary things she missed. His laughter from the next room, the unfinished cup of tea on the table, the way he’d remind her to eat on time. The small acts of kindness, the comfort of simply sitting together in silence — those were the things that had quietly become the heartbeat of her days.
That’s when it struck me again — how easily we let moments slip away while chasing things that don’t matter.

When someone we love goes away, pride, ego, and all those unspoken grievances fade into insignificance. What remains are memories of warmth. The laughter that filled the room, the way they made us feel seen, the small gestures that once felt routine but were the heartbeat of life itself.

Forgiveness, compassion, and patience aren’t meant for special occasions. They are the quiet bridges that hold relationships together. If there’s someone in your life you care about, let go of the need to win. Speak kindly, even when it’s hard. Sit together, even in silence. Take the picture, even when the house isn’t perfect.

Because tomorrow is never promised.
And one day, all the small things that seemed so important will mean nothing. Except for the love we could have shown but didn’t.
